MUSIC OF THE 1930's
From Swing to Swoon

From the Crash in 1929 to the start of World War II in 1939, the 1930’s were defined mostly by hard times and how people coped. People needed entertainment, which resulted in the Golden Age of Hollywood. Sound film brought music to a far larger audience than was previously possible. Breakthroughs in recording technology permitted newer, subtler styles of performing and led to the crooning craze. This is also the era of the rise of swing, and the beginning of modern pop music, as we know it today.

Through pop songs such as “Falling In Love Again,” “42nd Street,” “I’m Going to Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter,” and “Over the Rainbow,” Bobbi Carrey and Tomi Hayashi explore American life and culture in the United States during this decade.
