It was an incredible time - the faculty, the other students, the experience of working with so many different piano players and master teachers, but most of all it was amazing to dig so deep for the emotional content behind the songs. We’ve always talked about subtext, like it’s this cognitive process of coming up with a subtext, but in fact, it was primarily a visceral process.

The experience continues to peek out at unexpected times, and it is clear to me that the experience was almost like time-release capsules. Some of the experience was evident while I was there, but much of it is rising out of the mist for me.

It’s made me want to raise the bar for myself musically: to pare down, to go for quality and not quantity, to focus, to prioritize.

I also feel like my musical world has expanded beyond Boston to all different parts of the country. I feel like I’ve become part of a tribe.
