Biography

“Bobbi Carrey had it pretty sweet while she was working in corporate America. She spent 15 years in financial services, four of them as a senior vice president at Fidelity Investments. She was financially independent. She owned a house in Cambridge and a second home in Westport. She amassed a fine collection of art, photographs, and books. But about two years ago, worn out, and worn down from the exhaustion of it all, she decided to call it quits and do something she’d wanted to do all her life. She became a cabaret singer.” THE BOSTON GLOBE

Through her company, nowandthen Productions, Bobbi Carrey offers cabaret performances combining social history with popular American song. Her shows range from The Evolution of American Pop Music to Irving Berlin: The Voice of Everyman. Several years ago she co-produced and sang on THE NICK PAGE SONGBOOK CD. In December, 2002, she released her own CD, BETWEEN THE WARS: MUSIC FROM 1918-1941 to sold-out crowds and rave reviews.

Her prior musical experiences have ranged from folk singing to summer stock, from Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes to soloist with the Mystic Chorale, from Christmas Revels to a women’s vocal trio called ’The Mood Elevators.’ She has performed throughout New England, including CabaretFest! in Newburyport and Provincetown, The Boston Public Library, The Footlight Club, Tufts University, The Blacksmith House, The Encore Lounge, Center for Arts in Natick and at many private parties and events.

Bobbi Carrey graduated with a B.A. in Romance Languages from Tufts University, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After Tufts, she received a Masters in Visual Studies from Harvard University. For the first 15 years after graduating from Tufts, she was a successful photographer, teaching at Harvard, University of Iowa, and University of Michigan, and having her work widely circulated and exhibited. At this same time, she owned her own communications consulting company where she provided strategic planning and business development for clients such as the Fogg Art Museum, the Ford Foundation, Sotheby’s, Polaroid and Lotus.

In her mid-thirties, Bobbi received an MBA and embarked on a career in finance. After starting out at Bank of Boston, Bobbi spent 10 years with Fidelity Investments where she was a SVP responsible for evaluating venture capital investments, launching new businesses, and planning and implementing Fidelity’s first ethnic marketing initiative targeted at Asians and Hispanics. She left Fidelity several years ago and re-entered consulting, combining her strategic marketing and communications skills.

“And though she still keeps an eye on business, Carrey says that performing is the life for her. ’I have been singing since I was old enough to climb on the tabletop and get an audience. Everything else I have studied and worked at,’ she said. ‘Singing just comes naturally. I feel I was born with it.’”THE CAMBRIDGE CHRONICLE
